Scoliosis Research Society Announces René M. Castelein, MD, PhD, as Incoming Editor-In-Chief for Spine Deformity Journal

After months long search, the SRS is pleased to announce that René M Castelein, MD, PhD, has accepted the role of incoming Editor-in-Chief for the prestigious Spine Deformity Journal. 

Prof. Castelein -- who has been involved with the SRS for more than 20 years   -- has a long history with the Society. In fact, he conducted his fellowship with one of the founders of the SRS, G. Dean MacEwen, MD, in Wilmington, Delaware. 
Prof. Castelein served as Chair of the Academic Orthopedic Department at the University of Utrecht for more than 20 years. In his career, he has published more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, 150 of these specific to scoliosis. He has supervised more than 30 PhD thesis, many on scoliosis. He authored more than 10 chapters for medical textbooks, including a chapter in “Idiopathic Scoliosis: The Harms Study Group Treatment Guide 2nd Edition.

In 2019, he was the invited Harrington Lecturer at the SRS Annual Meeting in Montréal with the topic “Dropping the “I” in AIS, What will it Take?” This invitation-only lectureship was established as a tribute to SRS founding fellow, Dr. Paul R. Harrington (1911-1980).

In 2020, he was Knighted in the Order of the Dutch Lion from His Majesty the King of the Netherlands, for contributions to science and society, the highest non-military distinction in the Netherlands. 

Prof. Castelein will work in tandem with current Editor-in-Chief, John Lonstein, MD, to learn more about the journal and assume the responsibilities January 1, 2026. 

“I am honored with this important position, and I will perform this task with utmost commitment and energy,” said Professor Castelein. “Dr. Lonstein has done a tremendous job in getting the Journal from the start to its present, highly respected position in the whole arena of different spine journals.”
