Candidate Fellowship
Candidate Fellowship is open to orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and to non-physician members of allied specialties (such as research scientists) that have made a significant contribution to Scoliosis or related deformities. Candidate Fellows stay in this category for three-to-five years, during which time they must meet their fellowship requirements and demonstrate their interest in spinal deformity as per the goals of the Scoliosis Research Society. Surgeons that are currently in fellowship training programs are encouraged to apply. Requirements to apply for Candidate Fellowship (must have been completed in the past 5 years):
Candidate Application requirements:
- Application Document
- CV
- One Letter of Recommendation from SRS Active or Emeritus members
- Application fee of $100
Candidate requirements during 3-5-year term:
- Submit yearly on-line Morbidity & Mortality reports (surgeons).
- Submit at least one abstract to an SRS Annual Meeting or International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques (IMAST) or serve on one committee during the 3-5 year Candidacy term. Abstracts submitted prior to acceptance date will not count.
- Attend at least two SRS meetings (one must be a SRS Annual Meeting) during the Candidacy period. Meetings attended prior to acceptance date will not count.
- Submit a three month case list at the time of application to active membership (case lists from application for American Board Certification may be used in lieu).
- Pay annual membership dues on each calendar year of World Bank Economy rate.
- Review and submit your Annual Status Report available anytime online.
- At least 20% of your clinical practice should be devoted to spinal deformity at time of Active Fellowship application submission.
- Must be Board eligible at the time of Active application, international equivalency for out of US member.
Inability to complete these requirements during this maximum 5-year period may lead to Fellowship termination or deferral.
Active Fellowship
Active Fellowship is limited to orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and to non-physician members of allied specialties. They must have made a significant contribution to spinal problems, and must have a practice which includes at least 20% spinal deformity. They must have successfully completed a three to five-year Candidate Fellowship in the society. Only Active Fellows may vote and hold elected offices within the Society.
Active Application submission includes:
- Completed Active application.
- Current CV.
- A three month case list.
- Copy of Board Certification or International equivalency (what credentials allow you to perform surgery in your country of residence?).
- Copy of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons affiliation or spine organization affiliation of country and or region of residence.
- Three support letters written by current SRS Active or Emeritus (formally Active) members.
- Current photo.
- Clinical practice which includes at least 20% spinal deformity.
Active Fellowship requirements after accepted as an Active Fellow:
- Attend the SRS Annual Meeting or International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques (IMAST) at least once every three consecutive years and attend the SRS Annual Meeting at least once every five consecutive years.
- Submit yearly online Morbidity & Mortality reports (surgeons) or contribute to the research fund of a $300 assessment fee.
- Pay annual membership dues on each calendar year of World Bank Economy rate.
Associate Fellowship
Associate Fellowship is for distinguished members of the medical profession including allied health professionals who have made a significant contribution to scoliosis or related spinal deformities but do not wish to assume the full responsibilities of Active Fellowship and do not have to go through a five-year Candidacy period.
- Associate Fellows pay reduced membership dues. World Bank Economy rate.
- Are not eligible to vote or hold an SRS office or apply for Active Fellowship.
- Are eligible to serve on committees.
- Are required to attend an SRS Annual or IMAST Meeting once every five consecutive years.
Associate Applicants requirements:
- Must have attended two SRS meetings (SRS Annual or IMAST) prior to applying for membership. Meeting attendance must be within five years of the application date.
- Must have at least five years of spinal deformity work experience prior to applying for membership.
- A letter of recommendation from a current SRS Active or Emeritus (formerly Active) Fellow must also be submitted with the application.
