About the SRS Annual Meeting

The Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) Annual Meeting is a forum for the realization of the Society's mission and goals, the improvement of patient care for those with spinal deformities. A Faculty-led Pre-Meeting Course and abstract papers will be presented on an array of topics, including adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, growing spine, kyphosis, adult deformity, minimally invasive surgery, machine learning, and mental health considerations.

  • During a five-year period, held in North America three times and outside North America twice.
  • Approximately 1,500 attendees.
  • The latest and greatest scientific research, methods, and techniques in spinal deformity.
  • 4-day program including Pre-Meeting Course, Scientific Program, Lunchtime Symposia, Industry Workshops, and E-Point presentations.
  • Podium presentations are four minutes in length.
  • Minimum two-year follow up required for abstract submissions. The two-year follow up rule does not apply for categories of basic science or biomechanical studies or for topics where two-year follow up is irrelevant, such as 30 day re-admission rates.
  • Topics focus on current scoliosis and spinal deformity research.

The Annual Meeting is open to anyone involved in the treatment of spinal deformities including surgeons, residents and fellows, physician assistants, nurses, and other allied health professionals and researchers. The podium presentations will provide valuable information to all individuals caring for patients with spinal deformities.

Non-Exclusive License and Attestation

All faculty, podium, and E-Point presentations must disclose the author’s financial relationships with ineligible companies, from the past 24 months, on the second slide of the presentation.

Product Name Use Policy

SRS strongly prefers that pharmaceuticals and proprietary software/databases as well as surgical approaches or specific instrumentation such as “Surgimap, MIMICS, EOS Imaging, ROTEM, XLIF, DLIF, AxiaLIF, Solera, Vertex, Expedium, Mountaineer, VEPTR, Shilla, etc.,” are not used in presentations. These terms should be replaced by a generic term or description of the drug, software/database and/or instrumentation or technique unless the use of the term directly impacts learners’ understanding of the presentation or data. Instrumentation may also be referred to when the device name is a landmark system that is no longer sold (i.e. Harrington, Cotrel-Dubousset, Luque). It is recognized that studies evaluating a device or devices or comparing different devices or techniques may require the use of product or technique names. If a device trade name or industry developed technique using a trademarked name are used in an abstract or presentation, it will be specifically reviewed by the CME Committee for evaluation of any relevant financial relationships. When there is a known relevant financial relationship, expanded verbal disclosure will be necessary at the time of presentation. Furthermore, if a product name is mentioned, the audience should be informed of why it is necessary to give the name.

Howard Steel Lecture

The Steel Lecture is named after Dr. Howard Steel, a former orthopedist who believed that physicians are often too busy to “stop and smell the roses,” and endowed a lectureship to bring non-medical education to several orthopedic societies, including SRS. Delivering the 2025 Steel Lecture is Michèle Flournoy.

Michèle Flournoy is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of WestExec Advisors, and a Co-Founder, former Chief Executive Officer, and now Chair of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS).

Michèle served as the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from February 2009 to February 2012. She was the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense in the formulation of national security and defense policy, oversight of military plans and operations, and in National Security Council deliberations. She led the development of the Department of Defense’s 2012 Strategic Guidance and represented the Department in dozens of foreign engagements, in the media and before Congress.

Prior to confirmation, Michèle co-led President Obama’s transition team at the Defense Department. In January 2007, Michèle co-founded CNAS, a bipartisan think tank dedicated to developing strong, pragmatic and principled national security policies. She served as CNAS’ President until 2009, and returned as CEO in 2014. In 2017, she co-founded WestExec Advisors, a strategic advisory firm. Michèle serves on the boards of CNAS, Booz Allen Hamilton, the Council on Foreign Relations, Amida Technology Solutions, and CARE. She serves on a number of advisory boards, including for The Leadership Council for Women in National Security, The Mission Continues, Intel, and PIMCO. She is a Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, a current member of both the Defense Policy Board and the Aspen Strategy Group, and a former member of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board and the CIA Director’s External Advisory Board.

Michèle earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a master’s degree from Balliol College, Oxford University, where she was a Newton-Tatum scholar.
