Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome
Treatment
Recently, a new surgical technique termed "expansion thoracoplasties" with the vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR or "titanium rib") device, have been approved by the FDA to treat the combined thoracic deformity (spine/rib cage) by enlarging the constricted chest and straightening the spine indirectly without a spine fusion. Long-term follow-up studies of this technique are now underway.
